# Buying licenses

## Understanding license pricing

License pricing is based on the **commitment volume** validated with your account manager.

The price grid is therefore validated before you buy licenses and is visible in your space at any time.

Pricing units by product are as follows:

* MDR: number of endpoints, one license per device
* Email Security: number of mailboxes, one license per mailbox

Prices shown in the platform correspond to a monthly cost.

By default, licenses are charged at the price negotiated for your commitment volume. Two other pricing modes exist: **NFR** (Not For Resale), for licenses you buy for your own use, and **POC** (Proof Of Concept), to test a product before selling it.

To learn more about these modes, contact your account manager.

## Understanding license price calculation

We apply pro rata to calculate the price of a license. The formula is as follows:

```
Pro Rata = (Annual Price incl. tax / 12) x (Months + (Days / Days in the month)
```

With:

* Annual price excl. tax = the total price over 12 months incl. tax
* Months = the number of full months in the pro-rated period
* Days = the number of extra days beyond full months
* Days in the month = number of days in the current month

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.stoik.io/msp/account-management/buying-licenses.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
